  Scripture Reading:

  • Matthew 22:37-40 (NKJV): “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.'”
  • Matthew 25:40 (NKJV): “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NKJV): “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

Introduction

Currently, the world is filled with strife, contention, and hatred, but as believers in Christ, we are called to reflect God’s love in everything we do. Jesus made it clear that love is not only the greatest commandment but the very essence of what it means to follow Him. God IS love and love is not just a feeling—it is an active, tangible force that transforms us and the world around us. But what does love truly look like in practice?

Love as the Greatest Commandment

In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus emphasizes that love is the foundation of all God’s commandments. Loving God with everything we are—our heart, soul, and mind—is the most important thing we can do. And then, He goes a step further, teaching us that love for others is just as important. Jesus said, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This dual commandment forms the very heart of our faith, where everything flows out of our love for God and others.

Love for the Least of These

In Matthew 25:40, Jesus ties our love for others directly to our love for Him. When we care for the “least of these”—the poor, the marginalized, the forgotten—we are, in fact, showing love to Jesus Himself. This is not just a call to serve the powerful or those who can repay us but a profound reminder that love for God is demonstrated by our love for those who may never be able to offer us anything in return.

Attributes of Love

The apostle Paul gives us a beautiful description of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, where he outlines several key attributes:

  1. Patient and Kind – Love doesn’t rush or demand immediate results. It’s willing to endure, and it chooses kindness even when it’s difficult.
  2. Not Envious or Proud – True love celebrates others’ successes and is not self-centered. It values others more than ourselves.
  3. Not Rude or Self-Seeking – Love is respectful and thoughtful, seeking to serve others rather than looking out for its own interests.
  4. Not Easily Provoked – Love keeps a calm spirit, not reacting harshly or quickly to offense. Love does not take up offense.
  5. Rejoices in Truth – Love aligns itself with the truth, delighting in righteousness and the good things of God.
  6. Bears, Believes, Hopes, and Endures All Things – Love endures trials, believes the best in others, and holds on to hope even when circumstances are tough.

Practical Examples of How We Can Love

  1. Serve Others – Loving others looks like tangible service. Whether it’s helping a neighbor, serving at a food bank, or simply lending a hand to someone in need, love moves beyond words into action.
  2. Forgive and Show Grace – Love is forgiving, even when it’s difficult. Just as God has forgiven us, we are called to forgive those who have wronged us. Offering grace to others reflects God’s grace toward us.
  3. Listen and Be Present – Sometimes, the most loving thing we can do is simply to listen. Being present for someone and offering a compassionate ear can make a world of difference in their lives.
  4. Give Without Expectation – True love doesn’t ask, “What’s in it for me?” Whether it’s your time, resources, or talents, love is about giving freely. When we love others, we give without expecting anything in return.
  5. Stand with the Marginalized – Loving others often means standing with those who are oppressed, forgotten, or ignored. Jesus was a champion for the downtrodden, and we, too, are called to love the “least” and the lost.
  6. Pray for Others – One of the most powerful ways to love is through prayer. Interceding for others, lifting them before God, and praying for their well-being is an act of profound love.

Conclusion

Love is not just an abstract concept—it is the heartbeat of Christianity. As we strive to live out the greatest commandment, we must remember that loving God and loving others go hand in hand. Jesus shows us that love isn’t about grand gestures but about caring for the least of these. Every day offers opportunities to reflect God’s love in a broken world. By embodying patience, kindness, humility, and grace, we become vessels of His love, and we bring His glory to the world.

Let us commit today to love with the same love Christ has shown us—unfailing, selfless, unoffendable, and sacrificial. Love truly does make a difference in the world, one act at a time.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for showing us what true love looks like through Jesus. Help us to love You with all our hearts and to love others as ourselves. May we be a reflection of Your love in a world that so desperately needs it. Teach us to serve, forgive, and give freely, that we might truly honor You by loving the least of these. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
